Three Tips to Maximize the Polarion Experience

Author: John Fargo | March 29, 2021

Polarion has a lot to offer in all aspects of the product development lifecycle. Designed to deliver project transparency through real-time aggregated management information, the enterprise-grade application lifecycle management solution helps teams innovate, collaborate, and uncover synergies across distributed functions. But the value you pull from the tool rests solely on your ability to use it properly and efficiently.

To help you get the most out of your Polarion experience, we’ve compiled three tips that you can begin applying today that will set your projects on a trajectory of success.

1. Facilitate traceability with ‘linked items’ functionality

No one wants to spend hours manually tracing requirements. Yet, most compliance standards require product traceability across the entire project—a potentially daunting undertaking. Full traceability requires an answer to these five questions:

  • Which items are related?
  • How are they related?
  • What changed?
  • When did it change?
  • Who changed it?

Polarion does it all for you with the ability to quickly and easily navigate through linked relationships—so you can maintain compliance with your industry’s standards.

2. Streamline processes with Polarion’s ‘approvals’ feature

The email traffic typically associated with project document approvals can cause bottlenecks, project delays, and aggravation. While documentation is often thought of as a necessary evil in engineering management, it doesn’t have to be laden with headaches and frustration. Polarion synchronizes the management of all activities and assets across the entire development lifecycle, eliminating confusion and saving precious time.

With the Polarion ‘approvals’ feature, you can:

  • Approve a document independent of other users
  • Verify your decisions using electronic signatures
  • View and filter by current approvals status of all items in the document

3. Retrieve items quickly using the visual query builder

Projects have a lot of moving parts. With hundreds of requirements, verification items, and action items, it can be easy to get lost in a dizzying amount of information. Polarion enables you to create query items visually so you can navigate through a project’s artifacts. Pick from ‘Favorites’, (what most users query most frequently), ‘Recent’ (fields and values that you have recently queried), or from a dropdown list of all available elements. Queries can be saved, either for your own use or you can share it with other users.

Let’s say you only want to use the current project tasks assigned to you. You can construct a query that filters project artifacts that include only your desired work items—quickly and easily. In this scenario, you’d simply select the work item type from the dropdown (‘tasks’, for example), add a filter for ‘unresolved’ status, then select an assignee (yourself), in minutes.

These are just three of dozens of rich features Polarion has to offer—and you’re not expected to know it all. At Sterling PLM, we are project management experts who know Polarion inside and out. Partner with us to get the most out of your Polarion solution for quicker, more streamlined product development timelines, smoother workflows, and a lower cost of ownership.
